FAQ

Know more about the RUFUS Stack

The stack stays open by design, so most questions come down to workflow, flexibility, and how each part fits together.

WHAT MAKES RUFUS DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL TIMING SOFTWARE?

RUFUS is an open race timing ecosystem that combines Race Manager, Cloud, Event App, and Race App without forcing closed hardware, long-term lock-in, or an all-or-nothing workflow. You can run locally, add cloud services when needed, and connect the audience-facing and field-operation layers around the same race-day data.

CAN I START OFFLINE AND ADD CLOUD SERVICES LATER?

Yes. You can start with Race Manager and local timing workflows, then add Cloud, Event App, and Race App services when your operation is ready. The ecosystem is designed to let timers grow from local race control into connected event services without rebuilding their workflow.

HOW DOES OFFLINE SYNCHRONIZATION WORK?

Race-day timing can continue locally when internet is unavailable. When connectivity returns, the system syncs the relevant data back into the cloud layer so teams, event services, and public results can stay aligned. This gives you cloud advantages without making race execution depend on constant internet access.

CAN I USE CLOUDBOX WITH THE SAME RUFUS CLOUD ACCOUNT?

Yes. CloudBox systems are part of the same connected ecosystem and can be managed from your RUFUS Cloud account alongside other connected devices and services. Cloud lets you supervise status, passings, connectivity, and device health from the same layer used for publication and team coordination.

WHAT IS INCLUDED FOR FREE WHEN I START?

You can get started with the core RUFUS ecosystem for free, including unlimited Race Manager installs, Event App publications, and Race App devices. Paid plans unlock deeper cloud services, account-level controls, analytics, and other advanced connected capabilities as your operation grows.

DO I NEED TO CHANGE MY WHOLE WORKFLOW TO USE RUFUS?

No. RUFUS is designed to let timers adopt the stack in parts. You can start with Race Manager for local race control, then add Cloud, Event App, Race App, or connected devices when they make sense for your operation. The goal is to extend and improve your workflow, not force you into a complete reset.

DOES RUFUS ONLY WORK WITH RUFUS HARDWARE?

No. RUFUS is built as an open ecosystem. You can work with RUFUS hardware, supported third-party integrations, and custom connected devices through the Public API. The goal is to reduce hardware lock-in, not create more of it.

IS EVENT APP JUST FOR RESULTS, OR CAN I BUILD THE FULL EVENT PAGE THERE?

Event App is more than a results page. It can act as the public event destination for participants and spectators, with branding, event info, schedules, registration links, rulebooks, contact and social links, live results, athlete search, notifications, diplomas, and other audience-facing event services.

CAN RACE APP REPLACE MANUAL FIELD WORKFLOWS?

Yes. Race App is designed to replace fragmented manual field workflows with one mobile tool for judges and checkpoint staff. It supports manual timings, QR bib capture, race-day actions, and live chat with race control, helping staff execute directly from the course without going back to the desk.
